The 2012 Holiday Challenge

Need a little motivation to stick with your running routine? I do!  That’s why I created the Holiday Challenge!  It’s a free and easy way to run, win my favorite Wish-List gifts, connect with other like-minded runners and stay motivated to move through the holidays.  Here’s how it works…

It’s easy –>

  • Set a realistic weekly mileage goal every week from November 23rd through January 1st.  The mileage goal changes based on how busy your life is so you can achieve realistic goals and keep moving.  You can also include cross-training into the goal – 10 minutes of cross-training = 1 mile running.
  • Post your weekly goal and mileage workouts on the Holiday Challenge page.  Or, if you’re not on Facebook, post it in the comments section below.
  • Sit back, enjoy your hot chocolate and watch your email inbox for weekly blog posts from me and my elves announcing Wish-List Gift Winners, tips, recipes and much more!

Happy Holidays.

Coach Jenny

How did the half go Jim?

Reply

Jim December 6, 2012 at 12:22 am

Hi Jenny,

It went really well. Over 800 were pre registered. I came in at 2:00:23 with an average mile pace of 9:11. Felt really good after the run. I usually run alone but it was neat seeing all of those runners on the country roads around State College, PA. I am looking toward the Indy Mini Marathon this spring, if my exam schedule works out.

Thanks for asking

My goal for the week is 20 miles. I’ve shared the link for the challenge with a FB group I belong to and have recruited 4 others to join the challenge. We’ll be encouraging each other there.

As I get started today, I realized that with all of the busyness of the past few days preparing for Thanksgiving, I haven’t kept up with drinking water. I’m completely dehydrated! The Thanksgiving elves must have snagged my water bottles. Clearly, I *need* a Simple Hydration bottle to ensure I get back on track.

Good luck everyone!

11/23 – Harbor Rd: 6.15 miles

After Black Friday shopping with Patti (proof that I do really love her) just went for a watch-less, music-less run/jog on one of my favorite routes trying to get back in the grove. Know the distance by heart and also know it was slow.

Jim in Maine November 25, 2012 at 1:50 pm

11/24 – OSP 6: 6.01 miles in 58:37

Cloudy raw damp morning following an early morning rain … 41 degrees with 10 to 19 swirling wind out of the WNW. Best run since my long run with Sarah last weekend hopefully sets me up for a decent long run tomorrow.

Reply

Jim in Maine November 26, 2012 at 9:05 pm

11/25 – 15 is better then none: 15.01 in 2:31:48

Lack of motivation this morning lead to late start under sunny skies on a 32 degree morning with cool 14 to 21 mph breezes out of WNW. As I continued the rather hilly (for here) run the skies grew increasingly grey and cloudy while the temp climbed to 35 and the winds picked up running 15 to 23. Glad it is in the books as it likely wraps up a disappointingly uninspired week of running. Fortunately I do not have weeks like this very often. On a positive note the last miles were relatively strong (9:58, 9:48, 9:50, 9:31 & 9:28) and the trails I ran in the beginning were pleasant.

11/26 Old Shurfine Loop: 5.01 in 49:27

This week is starting out better then last as the cooler weather appears to be settling into northern New England for good for the next few months. On the other hand in February we’ll be clamoring for a day as warm as today … ;-). 37 degrees accompanied by a chilly 11 to 18 mph breeze out of the NW had me wearing light gloves for the first time in a long time. The first mile uphill and into the wind took forever (10:33) but the rest clicked off nicely (9:57, 9:51, 9:37 & 9:26).

Jim in Maine November 28, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Chapel Road: 10.01 in 1:39:51

Long day of work Tuesday (not home until nearly 8:30 pm) so did not run but day off work today which gave me time for a good long stability ball workout with Patti prior to completing the standard mid-week 10 miler. First run of the new season in steady snow flurries on an overcast 30 degree morning with 11 to 15 mph breeze straight out of the North. First 5 were sluggish (10:20, 10:25, 10:30, 10:15, 10:26) but ended run strong (9:30, 9:31, 9:57, 9:35 9:07).

Weekly total: 42.19 …goal: 60

Reply

Jim in Maine December 1, 2012 at 12:05 pm

11/30 – Huffing and puffing after work: 6.20 in 1:02:25

28 degrees at start, 22 at finish with steady 13 to 15 mph chilly breeze out of the N … the run was a lot harder then a 10-K run should be for me at this stage.

Weekly total: 48.39 …goal: 60

Reply

Jim in Maine December 1, 2012 at 2:23 pm

12/1 – Pre-Mill Cities Shakeout: 4.75 in 46:07

Best feeling run in a while gliding steadily and comfortably through a steady snowfall on a 23 degree morning with a slight 4 to 8 breeze out of the NNW. Threw some good .25 mile surges in just to get the feel of some solid leg turn-over … I’m glad i experienced this before I complete the long leg in tomorrow morning’s Mill Cities Relay for a WCRC Senior Mixed Team – and then heading home to celebrate the triplets’ 16th birthday.

Weekly total: 53.14 … goal: 60

Reply

Jim in Maine December 2, 2012 at 7:13 pm

12/2 – warm up for Mill Cities Relay – Leg 4: 1.0 mile

Finished with some solid strides …

Jim in Maine December 2, 2012 at 7:16 pm

12/2 – Mill Cities Relay – Leg 4: 9.5 miles in 1:19:55

Pleasantly surprised as my target or anticipated pace for today was 8:40/mile and I ended up with an 8:25 overall pace. Heavy fog provided a damp coolness on a 32 degree morning which climbed to 39 during the run. Went out fast – too fast in reality (7:53, 7:56) – and then held on though the remaining miles were anything but negative splits (8:13, 8:37, 8:32, 8: 36, 8:41, 8:45, 8 8:45 & 8:00 to close out the last 1/2 mile). Those first 3 miles make think a sub-8:00/mile 5-K is possible in 2013.

Weekly total: 63.64 … goal: 60

I am a better runner than computer “geek” so I am not sure that yesterday’s entry made it. Just in case it didn’t I’ll record that I ran a fast 10K (for me) today with 2 great guys that kept me moving. I am adding 6 miles to Friday’s biking & Saturday’s running miles. I now have 23/50. With a sore foot with some nerve damage, I’ll make sure that some of my miles come without me pounding my foot so I can keep on moving without pain.

Today was crazy. Couldn’t get out for a run, so I ran inside my house while I was making the kids tacos! The “track” around my kitchen, dining room and living room took 283 laps to make just a mile. It also took over three times longer than It would have if I would had just gone outside. It was fun chasing my son for several of those laps! It turned a not so glorious day into a super great feeling just to get my run in!

My goal this week is to continue to recover from a nasty case of Achilles tendinitis. 10 weeks off left me feeling like a newbie, but despite the leaden legs and the breathlessness, it feels great to be running outside again. Week so far. I’m kind of disappointed because
I’m sidelined this week, I took a tumble down the

See how my knee feels after that. Nothing broken

Looking forward for after the healing process…

12/8 – To the Park & Ride: 4.02 in 39:27

Really enjoyed last evening’s Daily Mile Meet-up in Newburyport (thanks again Jen R. and Karen A. for getting the ball rolling) … wish I’d been there earlier/longer but appreciate getting there at all. Upon arriving home stayed up and chatted with Patti while we enjoyed a few cool ones in front of the fire until about 1 then slept in for the first in ??? this morning …

After working out this morning, ran over to the Wells Park and Ride to get the car I left when Sarah E. and Ruddley gave me a ride down to the meet-up (thanks again!). 37 degrees and steady mist in a rolling fog seemed perfect for shorts and a long shelve tee as I enjoyed the run and an opportunity to stretch out prior to hours of supervised driving while the triplets continue to accumulate their required hours.

Reply

Jim in Maine December 9, 2012 at 12:00 am

12/8: Run Home from the Cinema: 3.68 in 36:02

Had an opportunity to squeeze in another short run when I dropped the triplets off at the cinema so they could meet some friends and enjoy a movie. Grabbed some running stuff out of the trunk, changed in the cinema rest room and left the car there allowing me to get in a few more miles on a still misty foggy 38 degree late-afternoon. Didn’t have any running shorts in the bag in the car car though so had to wear running pants I would usually put on after a winter race. Ah well … remedied that upon getting home.

12/9 – Lanquid 15 today (and 2,000 for the year)

Unhurried run partly but design and partly by circumstance. Bright clear sky and 36 degrees when I left the house but I ran into lots of clear sheen ice in the woodland shade at Laudhlom Farm – remanants of last night’s low of 23. It was particularly bad on the sections of broadwalk in the lowlands. But I just slowed down to avoid sliding off and doing a face plant and enjoyed the beautiful December morning. Seemed like I never really picked up a good pace today but that’s okay as the clear air and warmish temps (up to 45 by the finish) accompanied by an 11 to 15 comfortable breeze out of the the NNW. Not a great training run for Houston – but an enjoyable run nonetheless.

Surpassed 2,000 running miles for the year today too so my goal of 2,012 for the year looks real safe … ;-).

Weekly total: 41.02 … goal:35

My goal this week is 20 miles. Have been a crazy week and only have done crossfit. Monday 60 min= 6 miles , same thing Wednesday so I got 12/20. Tomorrow definitely will work out and looking forward for a race on Sunday! 5k just for fun :)
Is it ok to race after one week without running at all?
I have been doing races since April, at least once a month and this is the first time I havent run for a week ( although I have been doing crossfit) and am racing n Sunday. My body is worn out and crossfit was intense this week!
What do you think Coach Jenny?
Will keep you guys posted :)

Does anyone have any insights to share on keeping beginners motivated and not intimidated as the miles get longer? We were to have run a 9 mile long run this morning, and a quick taste test afterwards of different hydration options (including the one served at the race). I thought that might have been fun …

Week #3 Goal: 25 miles
M 12/10 – 60 minutes cycling = 6 miles.

Coach Jenny, I loved your holiday story! Here’s mine: For weeks my brother, sis and I would thread popcorn, peanuts & raisins on cotton thread. Pine cones from our back yard were rolled in peanut butter, then in millet/bird seed. On a night when the moon was full, my mom would fill hot chocolate in a red plaid aluminum thermos and pack some sugar cookies. Dad would carry an old wool camping blanket, and the kids carried our “decorations” in old shoe boxes. We hiked (while we sang carols) to a small woods near our home, found a pine tree and decorated it with the popcorn strings and pine cone ornaments. We warmed up with hot cocoa and munched on cookies as we sat on the blanket in the snow admiring our special tree. Just our little gift to the birds and small animals.

12/11 – Good to get the run in – even if it wasn’t a particularly good run: 5.16 miles in 53:07

Got home in time to get the run completed in daytime and enjoyed running even if it was a tad uncomfortable at times though the sun was shining, the temp was decent (42) and the wind was not unbearable (12 to 15 mph out of the NW). Ah well, next run will be better … also think I will skip the trails on the next run.

Tad sore tonight and no where near a progressive run but a long run I definitely needed to complete and had the pleasure of sharing with the Mainerunnah on a sunny but brisk morning as we ran north through Laudholm, the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refugee, along Parsons, Mothers and Kennebunk Beach past the Francisican Monastery into Kennebunkport and back along the ocean until about the Walker’s Point (the Bush Compound) before heading back south to Wells.

Nice mix of trails and quiet neighborhood roads on this chilly overcast (23 degrees with 9 to15 mph breeze out of the NNE) morning as I enjoyed a snow-free slow and easy recovery run after yesterday’s 20 miler. Can’t remember the last time I only ran 4 days in a week but with only one more mega-week of LEGO work activities ahead of me I expect there wouldn’t be many more weeks with only 4 days of running.

My goal this week is 20 miles. Came back to soon after running St Jude marathon so will try resist temptation of over training by hitting the pool as well this week. My favorite holiday memories are always New Years growing up. We always had a huge slumber party and it was fun to think the cool things we’d get to do now that we were starting a new year. As an adult I still like to think of all the great things ahead but also take time to reflect on all that has happened. Two years ago I was hit by a car while running at a park on a pedestrian cross. My goal for 2013 is to finish my rehab mentally and physically.

Called ‘Last Run Albany’, it took us through the beautiful historic area of downtown Albany and through a park that at this time if year is lit up with 125 fabulous Christmas light displays. I ran it with the two greatest running buddies ever and though none of us PRed, it was a real blast and I’m so thrilled that I did it! 14.1/18 for the week.

Did a 5K yesterday and a swelt and fit-looking Santa was the official starter. (He hasn’t had all the cookies and milk yet so he’s trim.) It was cold but not freezing and I did pretty well. Hope everyone had a good goal-reaching week.

Last available running day for me this week 6 miles for 10.2/10-12. Met the lower end of my goal this week. Interestingly, i have running yak trax on my Christmas list this year, not sure that i will get them. It will be my first year of running with snow, we did no have much last year.

Coach Jenny, I am sorry to learn about the loss of your brother. I lost my oldest sister a few years ago. Loss of any family member or friend is difficult. The loss of a sibling is especially difficult. I echo Kelly M’s comment. Keep and cherish those memories that you made with him. He will always be close by as long as you remember him. Take care.

I finished off last week with a 25 min DVD workout to just surpass my goal of 25 mies. I am already beginning this week behind but my brother had a serious snowmobile accident and having a 1 year old in the house to babysit changes the schedule. Funny how the time we most need the power of exercise and it sometimes it seems impossible to do. Goal is only 10 miles for the week. I am hoping for a run of any length tomorrow.

Tuesday I did a lot of fun Christmas shopping & then ran 6 with my hero – my niece. Today I ran 12 & just logged on to see the loss of Jenny’s brother. This kind of loss is difficult to deal with. “Bad things” have been happening & will continue outside of our control. Prayers, thoughts, running & biking (along with tears) help me get through some days that are harder than others. I am a survivor of being a hit by a car while biking & 3 years later a major brain injury. The brain injury almost didn’t let me come back & my thought process & brain skills are not where there were & may never get there. Thank goodness I can still run & will definitely put some miles in making my brain work & think about your comments Jenny (about your brother & your dad). My dad was never a runner, but he is in my heart & mind always. I am sure there are others out there with their loved ones running on thier shoulders too. Hugs to you all.

Cramming in a run before I pick my one son up from a half day at school and then going to my other son’s class to wrap up the craft we did together. I bribed my 2 year old to get into the running stroller by packing a big bag of popcorn and carrots to give the animals a Christmas dinner on the trail we run on. 12/21 1 mile hike in Andreas Canyon (picture oasis in the middle of a desert with a running stream and fan palms – breathtaking)
12/22 drank a whole date shake yesterday. Good for the soul but not so good for the waist line; repented by running a 10 mile long run.

Merry Christmas, everyone. Weather in Central Arkansas started out in the 60’s but it is beginning to look alot like central Pennsylvania. Has been a hectic week with limited internet access, in-law’s 50th anniversary, unanticipated funeral of brother-in-law’s father on Christmas eve, and a Christmas eve celebration. Goal this week 12-15 miles..snuck in 5.5 miles prior to Christmas eve celebration in warm weather 5.5/10-12 for week. Weather changing to snow in Central Arkansas, may need those Yak Trax for tomorrow’s run. Wishing all a safe, peaceful, warm, and enjoyable Holiday.

Finished out the year with a resolution 5k at first night in state college, pa. It was a cold night and a bit breezy. There were 920 finishing the race; I came in 170th (14 in my age bracket) at 24:09 at an average pace of 7:47 per mile. A PR for me and an end to a good year overall for a 51 year old guy who only returned to running last february after about 20 years.

Thanks Coach Jenny for the challenge and a place to share. I am not a social media, sharing kind of person, but this was fun and I enjoyed reading all of the post and learning about everyone and their efforts. Happy New Year to everyone, I wish you all safe and happy running and cross training in the new year.

12/22/2012 – Ran to Ogunquit with Brendan: 20.0 miles in 3:24:14

Ran this run early in the morning doing a couple miles on Drakes Island before heading south on US Route 1 with a nice side trip to Wells Harbor and then along Wells and Moody Beachs sometimes running through seaweed and rocks that the ocean had deposited on the rods after the recent high tides … cut through a field in Ogunquit before popping out on the footbridge section of Ogunquit Beach which we ran on until we reached the rocky coast and then cut back to Route 1 for the trip home. Blessed with great company (the Mainerunnah) and the best weather of the week as the temps were in the high 30’s under an overcast thin layer of clouds and a persistent breeze out of the south. Regrettably I ran out of steam and though the effort remained strong the last 4 miles were painstacking slow even with a tailwind as I dealt with dead legs and cramps. Still glad I did it and again apprecaite Brendan’s support and friendship. Afterwards we enjoyed a few cool ones and lunch at Mike’s Clam Shack before he headed back north. Thanks agin buddy!

This was my first run since last Sunday partially due to the retail merchandising work committemnts (which ended for this season when I arrived home last evening) that totaled 56.5 hours this week including drive, store and PC time and partially to see if some time would alleviate the pain I have been runing through for the last 4 or 5 weeks in my left foot … I think it may have helped with the latter but I don’t think it helped with my overall training.

12/23/2012 – EZ TOMF Recovery Run: 5.15 miles in 53:00

T’was two days before Christmas and when I stepped out of the house the brilliance of this fine morning was immediately apparent as the sun shined brightly in a deep blue cloudless winter sky. 23 degrees with a slight 6 mph breeze out of the W, the glare of the sun off the ice – particularly in the marsh – and off the rather placid ocean was a stark contrast to yesterday but provided a stunning environment for a relaxing easy recovery run following yesterday’s difficult but enjoyable 20 miler.

Enjoyed a few pints of this delicious IPA during the Bears victory while watching the game at Litchfield’s Sunday but I think it made me a tad sluggish on this bright 30 degree morning. The wind was brisk coming out of the N at 11 to 15 mph but the run was enjoyable and I had a few pauses to exchange Christmas greetings with folks out getting walked by their dogs …

12/25/2012 – Nice comtemplative Christmas run: 5.75 miles in 57:11

26 degrees under a wintery overcast sky with a steady snowfall being blown around by a 12 to 16 breeze out of the NNW … occasionally slick as the accumulating snow began to camouflage the infrequent patches of ice but overall an excellent New England Christmas morning to enjoy a run after sharing Christmas presents – much of which was new technology – even I received a small digital camera that i was promised I would receive a tutorial on.

I was reminded yet again that my 16 identical triplet daughters are wise in ways and methods I will never understand. At some point in the last 24 hours they downloaded a playlist of some my favorite Christmas music onto one of my MP-3’s and after the first two songs was a recording that the girls found of my favorite Christmas poem:

Christmas Bells

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
“For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men.”

I am one blessed man …

12/26/2012 – Last run as a 57 year old: 10.13 miles in 1:34:39

… and it was delayed a tad as both Patti and Sarah have come down with the flu – thankfully after Christmas. Clear skies and 26 with a cool but insignificant 5 to 8 mph breeze out of the ESE; warmed up to 29 by the time I finished. Snowy surfaces sometimes masked slick areas particularly on the trails in Laudholm but I managed to stay upright. One trail didn’t have any people footprints on it before I ran on it but had lots of deer hoof marks. Not a fast run at all (though I did close with a 9:28 final mile) but a truly pleasurable mid-week 10 miler.

Got a lot of errands to complete this afternoon before the predicted winter storm hits tomorrow. It should be beautiful but it sounds like I’ll be doing some serious shoveling to start my 58th trip around the sun. Also noticed that I only need 7 more miles to hit 2,100 running miles for the year and I know I’ll get most of that at the Operation Jack satellite run this Saturday so may not run tomorrow.

12/29/2012 – Operaion Jack 10-K (and a tad more): 7.49 miles in 1:11:05

8:00 am on the Brunswick Bike Trail with a fun group of runners raising on behalf of autism … 3rd annual and Sarah E. & Danielle S. put together a nice event though I was the lone thorn amongst a group of lovely roses as Andy M. missed the run. We did have the pleasure of meeting a couple of his beautiful children at the after-run celebration — and I finally got to meet Jen B. for the first time getting a first hand idea as to why people I know do enjoy running with her. There was a number of other runners as the group enjoyed a chilly start (17 degrees with virtually no wind) but a good time.

I stretched it out a bit to make sure I went 2,100 running miles for the year adding by going back out to finish with a few runners who fell back a bit — just as Danielle S. did for me in the initial run 3 years ago. Kicked off a solid 8:23 mile catching back up the group at one point which will suffice as my speed work prior to 1/1/13 Freezer Five.

Afterwards Patti and I took our girls out for lunch and a movie making this one fine Saturday.

Weekly total: 29.85 miles (Goal of 40)

6 miles running today puts me at 29/35

6 sluggish running miles yesterday, along with 4.5 mi cycling. Today was only 3 mi cycling. Total to date for the week: 12/18 run, 16.5/27 cycling. It’s supposed to be in the 20s tomorrow but I’m determined to go for a run anyway. Have to run off all the stuffing and the pie and the egg nog and the … Good thing the holidays only come around once per year.

I’m so impressed that you are running AND cycling…one day I’ll do both.

Tues 5.5 mile run
Wed 5 mile run
Thurs 3 mile run
13.5/20 for the week. Planning to take the family swimming tomorrow. For a farming family in central Manitoba this is a 2 hour drive. Looking forward to the visit together.

Core synergistics today for 55 minutes. Will probably make tomorrow a stretch day and rest for my Saturday long run. Starting my training for the Eugene Marathon – hurray!

It was chilly but I did 6 miles running today. That puts me at 18/18 for the week, along with 21/27 cycling.

How many miles do you get in your shoes? I realized yesterday that another pair of mine are shot after 350 miles. I never get close to 500. My right knee always tells me.

Reply

Debbie December 30, 2012 at 10:44 pm

Hi Nicholle, Very wise of you to listen to your knee! My last 2 pairs of Brooks Defyance each had about 500 miles on them when I retired them. I’m a neutral runner with mild under pronation of my right foot. I run mostly on crushed stone paths and some asphalt bike paths. The shoe I retired yesterday was the Brooks Pure Flow at about 300 miles. It is a minimalist shoe, and I was told when I bought them that it would break down sooner. I love the shoe and bought another pair today. Run strong!

Nicholle December 31, 2012 at 7:12 pm

This is very helpful. Thanks! I run in Brooks Ravenna and I have a right foot problem too. Maybe I need to buy a more substantial Brooks shoe this time. I just signed up for a March marathon and I’m about halfway through my current pair of shoes. Perhaps trading btwn two pair with one being for short runs and the new for long runs will help. Thanks again!

All the best to you in training and running your marathon in March!

Nicholle December 29, 2012 at 12:09 pm

5 miles on the treadmill yesterday. It was 16 degrees and I could really use a second pair of thermal pants (hint, hint!).

19/30 for the week. Today should be a long run day but I’m pretty worthless on the treadmill after 5 miles and it’s too dark to go outside this morning. I’ll add a 6th run for the week on Sunday to try to make up the difference. I’m sure my house guests won’t mind if I slip out…they just want to see their grandchildren anyway :)

4.5 mi cycling this morning, so for the week that’s 25.5/27 cycling. A little short but at least I met my 18/18 running goal.

Keep up the good work everyone!

40 min swim Friday
4 mile run Sat
21.5/20 for the week so far. Heading to the cabin today with plans for lots of xcountry skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and the occasional run. Have a great weekend everyone!

I didn’t check the schedule & the 10K didn’t happen today. I got there at almost the last minute & nobody else was there. Somtimes good things happen out of things that are screwed up so at a slower pace I got 10 miles accomplished. It is definitely a different run than my 10K race & I’ll have to pay more attention & get in the next official event. (43/35)

Great day for a 4 mile run with my buddy, blue sky, snow topped mountains. We stopped to watch the eagles for a few minutes. They have just arrived here. Awesome run. 32/22.

Beautiful sunny day but icy streets – so slow running. 4 miles today 36/22. Didn’t expect to run this much this week. Feeling great.

1 mile short last week due to being sick. Hopefully this week I’ll make my goal – which is – 24. I’ve done 4 so far today. Happy New Year everyone!

Goal for the first week of the New Year: 18 mi running, 24 mi cycling. Today there were some icy spots to be careful of but I still ran my planned 6 mi. I also did 4.5 mi cycling.

Have a safe New Year’s celebration. I’m staying home with Ryan Seacrest to watch the ball drop.

I fell short last week – 22/30. Fighting off germs, too few hours of sleep, and too much coffee to compensate left me exhausted and I took an extra rest day.

6 miles outside today felt great. Signed up for the DC Rock-n-Roll marathon in March so I’m especially glad I did this holiday challenge to keep up my mileage. 11 weeks to go!

Sunday was a day off & I got to spend a lot of time with my 84 year old mom. She is an inspiration!

I finished my 35 mile goal week with 43 running miles.

Today I did an easy 4.5 running miles & 60 minutes of spinning. I am battling a bit of a cold but moving helps me feel better. My tempo might be slower, but I still aim to get 35 miles in this week.

At this time tomorrow, we’ll be in 2013. I wish everyone a happy & healthy New Year. Maybe I’ll see some of you at a running event!

Stretched and foam rolled today with 50 minutes of upper body. Met my week 5 goal and more. It has been a good month of some running, cross training and rest, and I am looking forward to a new year and new cycle of training. I echo Julie and wish everyone a happy and healthy new year with many fulfilling runs. Coach Jenny thanks for the holiday challenge.

Today I pushed on a hilly treadmill program for 60 minutes & got in just over 7 miles. I then took a few minutes to cool down & logged only a 1/2 mile. That gives me 12/35 that I’ll continue to log.

I’ll repeat & say thanks Jenny. You inspire a lot of us to keep doing what keeps us healthy & happy.

Thanks to everyone else that signed on & took this challenge & have a great 2013.

Jenny, the Holiday Challenge is exactly what I needed. I happily reached my weekly goal. You are right by taking it day by day. When you look at it this way your weekly goal is not a challenge. I look forward to keeping this “challenge” going through out the year. Happy New Year!
